Central Valley drought

All our eggs in one vulnerable basket

“We’re out of water”

The US has put much of its agricultural eggs in one basket, California’s Central Valley.

It’s a fertile place and it has near-perfect weather – but its water supply is anything but certain.

Last month, state water authorities announced that many California farmers won’t get their annual water allocation from the State Water Project. Federal water authorities have chimed in with a similar message about non-delivery from the Central Valley Project.

Crops can’t grow without water.

For the last seventy years plus, the US has been burying millions of acres of prime farmland under shopping malls and subdivisions all over the US.

This never made sense and now the vulnerability of the system is becoming obvious to even the most dense.
