The Victorians were unknowingly poisoning themselves…kind of like we do.

The difference between then and now:
There were ethical doctors then who fought the companies that manufactured it.
Now if you go to a doctor with poisoning from a product, they are conveniently ignorant, if not hostile to your problem.
