BPA in canned foods
FDA finally outlaws BPA in baby bottles but what about other food containers?
In July 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it is banning BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups.
It’s a step in the right direction….or is it?
The industry has already stopped using BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups due to consumer pressure, so the ban has no practical effect. The FDA says the ban is not because BPA is unsafe, but because it is no longer used and the issue is an “unnecessary distraction to consumers.”
Consumer groups continue to call for a ban on BPA in other food containers, including the lining and sealant of canned foods and infant formula.
As Jason Rano of the Environmental Working Group says: “Once again, the FDA has come so late to the party that the public and the marketplace have already left.”
