The Victorians were unknowingly poisoning themselves…kind of like we do.

And you better believe that the manufactures of the day and the news media they owned made sure that this information was conveniently not reported.

The difference between then and now:

There were ethical doctors then who fought the companies that manufactured it.

Now if you go to a doctor with poisoning from a product, they are conveniently ignorant, if not hostile to your problem.
