For those of a particular age group, our association with chia seed is limited to the novelty chia pet. Oh, but they’re so much more!

Chia, the seed of the salvia columbariae plant, is a superfood. It’s rich in omega 3 fatty acids, containing more omega 3 than salmon! It helps regulate blood sugar, and it’s an excellent source of both antioxidants and fiber.

What’s more, chia is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot synthesize.

Chia seeds have a mild nut-like flavor and can be added to salads, smoothies, and baked goods. In fact, when soaked in water, chia can replace the fat in baked goods recipes.

This informative video talks about not only the health benefits, but how and where chia is grown.
